What GEO is and why your company needs to appear in AI answers
Think about how you search for things these days. More and more people, instead of typing into Google and choosing among ten links, ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity directly: "which IT company do you recommend for my business?". And the AI does not return a list: it gives a direct answer, with two or three names.
Here is the key that changes the rules of the game for your business: either your company is in that answer, or for that customer you do not exist. There is no page two. There is no "eighth link". There is one short answer, and only a few brands make it in.
Getting to be among those brands is what GEO is about. We explain what it is and why it should matter to you now.
What GEO is
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the set of strategies for getting your company mentioned, cited and recommended by artificial intelligence assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Copilot when someone asks them.
Put simply: just as for years companies have wanted to "show up on Google", the goal now is to show up in the AI's answer. Because more and more customers ask there before deciding whom to buy from or hire.
How it differs from "showing up on Google"
It is the logical question: "isn't this the same as traditional Google ranking?". Not exactly, and the difference matters:
- On Google you compete for a place in a list. You can be in eighth position and still get the odd visit.
- On AI you compete to be mentioned in a single answer. If you are not among the first brands it names, you simply do not appear.
It is an enormous difference. In the world of AI there is no middle ground: either you are one of the options the AI recommends, or you are invisible to whoever asks. And that person will never see the rest.
Why this is already happening (and is not "what's coming")
It is easy to think this is futurism. It is not: it is happening right now and moving fast. The data makes it clear:
- A growing share of people who used to search on Google now ask an AI assistant first, especially for services and in the professional sphere.
- Many consumers say they have made a purchase decision based directly on what an AI answered.
- Summaries produced by artificial intelligence already appear in a good share of searches of a commercial type.
The change in habit has already reached the average customer: the owner of a consultancy, a clinic, a law firm or a small business who, instead of opening Google, asks ChatGPT. And that conversation is starting to replace traditional search.
What is at stake for your business
Translated into what really matters: if a potential customer asks the AI about a company like yours and you do not appear, someone else takes that opportunity. Without you finding out, just as happened with those who did not show up on Google, but even more drastically, because here only a few fit.
And the other way round: companies that do appear in those answers gain an enormous advantage. They become "the one the AI recommends", with all the trust that conveys. In sectors and areas where almost nobody is working on this yet, whoever moves first takes that spot before the competition.
And how is this achieved?
Here is the important part and also the most delicate. Appearing in AI answers is not a matter of a trick or of "switching on an option". It depends on how the assistants perceive your business: your authority, how your information is presented, your presence in the digital ecosystem and a series of technical and content factors that have to be worked on together.
It is not magic, but it cannot be improvised either. Each assistant works differently, the rules change every month, and doing it badly means effort without results. That is why GEO, done well, is strategic, specialised work: understanding how the AI "sees" you today, detecting why it does not mention you and building, step by step, the signals that make you a source the assistants recommend.
Get ahead before your competition does
We are at an unusual moment: a new way for customers to find you that almost nobody is taking advantage of yet. In a while, appearing in AI answers will be as normal —and as competitive— as showing up on Google. Right now, the space is free for whoever moves first.
At Bytechip we help freelancers, small businesses and companies take this step: we analyse how your business appears —or does not appear— when customers ask the AI, and we work so that you are one of the companies these assistants recommend. So that, when someone asks about a business like yours, the answer includes you.
If you want your company to be in AI answers before your competition, let's talk.
