🚀 R36S black screen: the definitive guide to installing ArkOS and reviving your console
If you have run into the dreaded R36S with a black screen after trying to update it or simply when switching it on, don't panic. At Bytechip we know this is the most common fault of this console, and the solution is usually a clean installation of ArkOS.
In this guide we show you how to do the process correctly, avoiding the typical space and panel-compatibility mistakes.
⚠️ Critical requirement: the MicroSD card
Before starting, forget 16GB cards. Although the ArkOS image looks small, you need a MicroSD of at least 32GB.
- Why 32GB? With 16GB, the system does not have enough space to expand the partitions and finish the image properly, which usually leads to boot errors or data corruption.
- Quality: Use brands such as SanDisk or Samsung. The "clone" cards that come from the factory with the R36S are the main cause of the black screen.
🛠️ Tools needed
- Win32 Disk Imager: It is the most stable software for writing these specific images.
- ArkOS firmware (AeolusUX): The optimised version that supports the different hardware variants of the R36S.
- A quality card reader.
💻 Step 1: Flashing with Win32 Disk Imager
- Connect your 32GB SD to the PC.
- Open Win32 Disk Imager.
- Select the ArkOS .img file you downloaded (unzip it first if it comes as .zip or .gz).
- Under Device, select the drive letter of your MicroSD.
- Click Write and wait until it finishes at 100%.
🖥️ Step 2: Fixing the "R36S black screen" error (the 4 panels)
The R36S is manufactured with 4 different types of screen. If after flashing you switch it on and still see the black screen (but you hear sound or see the backlight), it is because the panel driver does not match.
Follow these steps to fix it:
- Put the SD back into the PC after the first boot attempt.
- Go into the partition called BOOT.
- You will see several files with the .dtb extension. The system uses by default one called rk3326-r35s-linux.dtb.
- In the AeolusUX repository, you will find a folder with the 4 alternative DTB files.
- You have to try them in turn: rename the current file to .old and copy one of the new ones, renaming it exactly as rk3326-r35s-linux.dtb.
- Repeat until the picture looks perfect. This fixes 99% of black-screen cases!
🕹️ Step 3: How to download and transfer your games (ROMs)
Once ArkOS boots and your screen looks perfect, it is time to fill the console with magic. ArkOS is very organised, so we must follow its rules for the games to appear in the menu.
1. Where to download games safely?
For legal reasons, the ArkOS system comes empty, but there are trustworthy sites where the community preserves these classics:
- Internet Archive (Archive.org): It is the "library of Alexandria" of retro. Search for terms such as "Tiny Best Set Go" or "R36S Romset" to find complete collections already prepared and curated by experts.
- Vimm's Lair: A site legendary for its cleanliness (no deceptive ads) where you can download individual games for almost any classic console.
- Bytechip tip: Avoid websites with lots of shiny "Download" buttons; they are usually advertising or malware. Stick to the sources mentioned.
2. How to put the games on the MicroSD
Depending on whether you use one card (TF1) or two (TF1 for the system and TF2 for games), the process varies slightly:
- If you use a single card (32GB or more):
- Switch off the console and connect the MicroSD to your PC.
- You will see several partitions. Open the one called EASYROMS.
- Inside you will see folders with console names (e.g. nes, snes, psx, megadrive).
- Copy your game files into their corresponding folder.
- If you use two cards (recommended):
- Insert an empty MicroSD into the console's TF2 slot and switch it on. ArkOS will detect that it is empty and automatically create the whole folder structure for you.
- Switch off, take out that SD and connect it to the PC. Now you only have to drag your games into the folders already created.
3. The final step: updating the list on the R36S
Once you have copied everything and put the card into the console:
- Switch on the R36S.
- If the games do not appear, press the START button to open the main menu.
- Go to "Game Settings" and select "Update Games Lists".
- The console will scan the folders and, there you go, your games will appear in their corresponding section.
💡 The Bytechip professional touch
If you download the collections we have recommended (such as the Tiny Best Set), they usually include the covers (images). If not, you can connect your R36S to Wi-Fi (using a USB adapter) and use the "Scraper" function inside the ArkOS menu so the console automatically downloads the cover and description of each game. It will look impeccable!
