🔌 Power supplies: the component that can fry your PC if you save too much
It is the most common mistake when building a PC: spending €500 on a latest-generation graphics card and only €30 on the power supply. At ByteChip we tend to say that the power supply is the "heart" of the system; if the heart pumps badly, the rest of the organs will end up failing.
Today we explain why saving 40 euros on this component can end up costing you the 1,000 euros your whole computer is worth.
1. The real function of the power supply (it is not just giving power)
The power supply does not just "pass" electricity from the socket to your components. Its job is to convert the alternating current (AC) in your home into extremely stable direct current (DC).
- The danger: A poor-quality power supply has cheap internal components (capacitors) that do not filter voltage spikes well.
- The consequence: A small micro-spike from the mains can get past the protections of a cheap power supply and literally "burn" the processor or motherboard.
2. The myth of "Watts": don't trust the sticker
A power supply saying "700W" on the box does not mean it can deliver that steadily. Low-end power supplies often lie in their specifications or only reach that power for a few seconds before overheating.
- At ByteChip we always recommend looking at the amperage on the +12V rail, which is the one that really powers your graphics card and processor.
3. 80 Plus certification: what do the colours mean?
You have surely seen the Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum badges. These indicate energy efficiency.
- A Gold power supply wastes less energy as heat than a White or Bronze one.
- Careful: An 80 Plus Gold badge does not guarantee the power supply is indestructible, but it is an indicator that the manufacturer has used better-quality internal components.
4. How to spot a "poor-quality" power supply?
If your PC has these symptoms, your power supply may be on its last legs:
- Sudden restarts: Especially when you are gaming or editing video (when the PC demands more power).
- Burning smell or electrical noises: Small internal "sparks" (coil whine).
- Suspicious weight: As a general rule in electronics, a power supply that weighs nothing is usually a sign that it lacks heatsinks and internal protections.
🛡️ Protect your investment with ByteChip
Don't gamble with generic or white-label power supplies. At ByteChip, when we build or repair a computer, we follow a golden rule: the power supply is never negotiable.
- Real consumption calculation: We analyse how much your hardware consumes to recommend just the right power, no more, no less.
- Trusted brands: We only work with manufacturers that offer real warranties (Corsair, Seasonic, EVGA, etc.).
- Cable management: A well-installed power supply improves airflow and avoids short circuits from badly positioned cables.
