☕ I've spilled coffee on my laptop: first-aid guide (what NOT to do)
It has just happened. One clumsy movement and your coffee (or water, or soft drink) has ended up on your laptop keyboard. Panic takes over, but what you do in the next 5 minutes will determine whether your computer lives or dies.
At ByteChip we have rescued hundreds of wet computers, and most were saved because the owner kept a cool head. Here is your emergency roadmap.
🛑 STEP 0: Switch it off NOW!
Do not log out, do not save the document. Hold the power button until the screen goes off. If the laptop has a removable battery, take it out immediately. The greatest danger is not the liquid itself, but the short circuits caused by electricity passing through the conductive liquid.
❌ What you must NEVER do (dangerous myths)
- DO NOT use a hairdryer: Hot air can melt the keys and, worst of all, pushes the liquid further into the motherboard.
- DO NOT put it in rice: It is the great myth. Rice does not absorb the internal moisture and, in exchange, releases a fine powder and starch residue that, when mixed with the liquid, creates a corrosive paste that ruins the components.
- DO NOT switch it on "to see if it works": Even if it looks dry on the outside, inside the liquid can take days to evaporate. If you switch it on while there is still moisture, you will cause a fatal short circuit.
✅ What you SHOULD do (rescue guide)
- Put it in an inverted "V": Open the laptop and place it face down on a clean towel, forming a tent. This helps the liquid drain out of the keyboard and not towards the motherboard.
- Dry the surface: Use absorbent paper that does not leave residue to wipe up the visible liquid. Do not rub, just press gently.
- Take it to a professional as soon as possible: Even if it dries, the coffee residue (sugar, milk, acids) stays in the circuits and causes slow corrosion. The computer may work today but die in two weeks.
🔬 How do we save your laptop at ByteChip?
When you bring us a wet computer, we do not just wait for it to dry. We carry out a deep technical cleaning protocol:
- Full disassembly: We separate each component to locate traces of liquid.
- Ultrasonic cleaning: We place the motherboard in an ultrasonic bath with high-purity isopropyl alcohol. This removes corrosion and sugar residue even under the smallest chips.
- Controlled drying: We use precision ovens to remove every last molecule of moisture.
- Keyboard replacement: In many cases, the keyboard is the only thing lost, protecting the rest of the computer.
📞 Hurry, time counts! If you have just spilled liquid, do not wait. Write to us through the contact form or bring it to our workshop. At ByteChip we are experts in technological resuscitation.
