🕹️ ArkOS vs. OnionOS vs. Stock: the definitive guide to operating systems
When you take your new console out of the box, it comes with the Stock system (the factory one). But in the handheld community, the first thing we do is change it. Why? Because custom systems (CFW) squeeze out the power and improve the interface.
Here is the comparison of the three big ones so you know which to install on your Bytechip device.
1. Stock OS: the factory "does the job"
It is the system that comes preinstalled.
- The good: You do not have to do anything. Switch on and play. It is usually simple and straightforward.
- The bad: It is often poorly optimised, the emulators are old versions and the Spanish translation is usually… creative (not to say bad).
- Ideal for: Anyone who does not want technical complications and only wants to play for 10 minutes now and then.
2. OnionOS: the "king" of user experience
If you have a Miyoo Mini or Miyoo Mini Plus, this is the system you MUST have. No discussion.
- Best feature: Its Game Switcher function. You can jump from a Mario game to a Zelda one in 2 seconds, right where you left off. It is the closest thing to the experience of a modern console (like the Switch).
- Key points: Beautiful interface, plenty of themes and excellent battery management.
- Ideal for: Miyoo users looking for the most polished and professional experience possible.
3. ArkOS: the performance "beast"
It is the preferred system for Anbernic consoles (such as the RG353V) or the R36S. It is based on Ubuntu/Linux.
- Best feature: It is extremely powerful and customisable. It lets you use PortMaster to play PC games (such as Stardew Valley or TMNT) directly on the console.
- Key points: It receives constant updates and lets you tweak every last emulator setting to gain those extra FPS in PSP or Dreamcast games.
- Ideal for: "Power users" who love tinkering, customising every detail and want maximum performance.
