# 💉 What is an SQL injection and how can it ruin your customer database?

💉 What is an SQL injection and how can it ruin your customer database? If you have an online shop or a website with registration forms, your most valuable asset is your database. That is where you keep names, addresses, emails and, sometimes, purchase histories. An SQL injection (SQLi) is the method cybercriminals use to "trick" your website into handing over all that data. At ByteChip we protect servers every day, and today we explain how this attack works and why it should worry you. 1. How does the attack work? Websites use a language called SQL to communicate with the database. For example, when a user enters their name in a login form, the website asks an internal question: "Is there a user called John with password X?". An attacker, instead of entering a normal name, types malicious code into the text box. If the website is not well protected, the database interprets that code as a legitimate command. 2. The consequences: a disaster for your business A successful SQL injection can allow the hacker to: Steal data: Download your whole customer list to sell on the Dark Web or use for phishing campaigns. Delete information: Remove entire tables of products, orders or users, leaving your business inoperable. Change prices: Imagine an attacker changing the price of all your products to €0 or €1 before making a mass purchase. Impersonate identities: Enter your website's administration panel with full privileges. 3. Why does it happen? (The programmer's mistake) The main problem is lack of validation. It happens when the website's code blindly trusts what the user types. Old systems or badly programmed WordPress plugins are the favourite victims of these attacks. 4. How to protect yourself: ByteChip's shield The good news is that SQL injections are avoidable with the right practices: Prepared statements: The standard technique for separating code from user data. Web Application Firewall (WAF): A filter that blocks injection attempts before they reach your server. Critical updates: Keeping WordPress, PrestaShop and all your plugins up to date to patch known holes. Security audits: Reviewing the code for vulnerable points. 🛡️ Don't leave your data to chance Do you know whether your website is vulnerable right now? A small oversight in a form can cost you your customers' trust and legal penalties for data loss. At ByteChip we carry out web security audits to make sure your databases are impregnable: Vulnerability scanning: We detect SQL injection flaws before hackers find them. Advanced protection: We implement state-of-the-art firewalls and security protocols. Cleaning and recovery: If you have already suffered an attack, we recover your database and close the breach. 📞 Protect your most valuable asset: Write to us through the contact form or visit our IT Security section.
